Tour of the Church (Part 9)

PreviousNext

Stepping out into the main body of the church, we are in front of the Sanctuary of the church. There are three focal points here; in the centre is the Altar, the throne of Christ and the place of the Holy Sacrifice; to the right is the Ambo, from where the Scriptures are proclaimed; to the left, the Presidential Chair, where the main celebrant at Mass sits. The Altar top is a solid slab of stone, in which is sealed a relic of St Gregory the Great, our patron, so that it is, in a sense, his tomb. However, it is constructed in such a way as to remind us that when we share in the Holy Sacrifice, we are guests at the Table of God, sharing his sacrificial meal.
