Tour of the Church (Part 4)

PreviousNext

Also around the walls of the church, we see the carvings of the events of the last journey of the human Jesus, the “Via Dolorosa”, the Way of Sorrows.

We meet the sequence of “Stations”, as they are called, (a station is a stopping place on a journey) at the eighth, where we recall Jesus speaking to the women of Jerusalem (Luke 23:28-31). We are reminded that even as he carried his cross on the way to Calvary, he had time for others; he always has time for everyone, and we can all spend time with him, and whatever our troubles, he will comfort us.

The carvings at St Gregory’s were made by Anthony Foster, a colleague and pupil of Eric Gill, who carved the stations of the cross in Westminster Cathedral.
