The Image of St Oscar Romero
Oscar Romero was Archbishop of San Salvador, and a vocal critic of the government of El Salvador at a time when death squads were carrying out political assassinations and the poor, in particular were being oppressed.
On 24th March 1980 he was fatally shot while saying Mass; one of the death squads was held responsible for this act, which shocked the entire world.
On 14th October 2018 he was canonised, and stands as a voice for the poor, the marginalised, the exploited and all who suffer unjustly. With him, he Church stands for the preferential option for the poor.
